For the most of people, Siberia remains a mysterious and inaccessible land. The main reason is a lack of information. Travel on Siberia will raise the veil of the mystery, and everything you see will remain in your memory for a long time. Siberia is a unique opportunity to touch the nature and culture of three very different regions of Russia: the Krasnoyarsk Region, Tuva and Khakassia Republics.

INDIVIDUAL TOUR 4X4 OF SIBERIA is perfectly combined with multi-day and classic tours in Moscow and St. Petersburg. And we also highly recommend you to arrive to Krasnoyarsk the day before, to have chance to take rest after long flights and to start excursions relaxed. The hotel will be provided on your request.

(Breakfast, Lunch, – )

A: At early morning pick up cars and drive south into the Khakassia Republic.

You will have a chance to see a Man Made Sea, to cross two nature zones and to reach the Sayan mountains. The group will travel to the South through the city of Divnogorsk. They will cross the river Yenisei twice. The road goes along one of the biggest dams in the world – the Krasnoyarsk Hydroelectric power station (outside view). It was built in 1972, forming a water basin 400 km long.

Khakassia was the cradle of Siberian civilization, and enormous standing stones and ancient burial mounds can be found all over the republic.

B: About 15:00 Arrival to Abakan, lunch at restaurant.

C: Then the group goes to Shushenskoye village, located near the Sayano-Shushenskaya hydroelectric power station (outside view). The dam was built in 1987, height 245 meters, the length of the ridge 1,070 meters, the width at the base of 110 meters, the width of the crest 25 meters. Hydroelectric dam forms the Sayan-Shushenskoye reservoir, volume of 31.34 km ³ and an area of 621 km². In the area of the reservoir there is the Sayano-Shushensky Biosphere Reserve

D: In the evening we arrive at Shushenskoye village, where Lenin spent 3 years in exile and got married. Dinner.

Overnight in a guest house in Shushenskoye.

EXTRA CHARGE (OPTIONAL): Extra charge (Optional): Before dinner a visit to Russian banya is highly recommended!

Accommodation in a guest house in Shushenskoye.

(Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

A: The day begins with an excursion to the ethnographical museum. In 1970, to mark the centenary of Lenin’s birth, a 2-block area in the centre of the village was reconstructed to look exactly as it had looked in 1870. There are now around 200 “old” Siberia houses, including homes, a farmhouse, shops, a jail and a tavern.

B: We then head on towards Tuva across the Western Sayan mountains. We travel along the Usinskiy Trakt, built in 1910, passing the historical town of Yermakovskoe (named after the Cossack who first invaded Siberia) and the fruit-growing villages of Grigorevka and Chornaya Recha. There will be some truly spectacular mountain scenery along the way, where snow can fall even in June. For some great views of the ridge, we can walk 1.5km up a steep track that leads to a radar station.

C: We descend the other side of the mountains into the wooded river valleys and rolling grasslands of Tuva. The first village we pass is quaint little Turan, full of old wooden houses and inhabited mostly by Russians. Visit the little local museum before heading on over a final mountain pass to Kyzyl.

Overnight in a yurt camp 22 km outside of Kyzyl.

D: After dinner we will have a performance of traditional Tuvan throat singing – “khoomei”

Accommodation at the yurt camp Biy-Khem

(Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

The place of this day is Kyzyl, the capital of Tuva.

A: This city is situated in the place where Biy-Khem (the Big Yenisey) and Ka-Khem (the Small Yenisey) unite their waters and give a life to the great river Yenisey. The first sightseeing to visit here is the Geographical Centre of Asia. Built in 1964 and reconstructed in 2014, the monument represents a big globe on which the contours of continents are marked, Tuva and Kyzyl are specially indicated.

B: The next place of visiting is the Buddhist temple where you will have a chance to hear a sermon of the lama. Buddhism in Tuva exists in harmony with shaman beliefs.

C: Visiting mineral spring near Kyzyl. Lunch is organized in a local restaurant.

D: After lunch the group will visit the Regional Museum of Tuva (exhibition “Scythian gold”) and see a unique archaeological finds of different epochs (except Monday). Free time in the city. Visit local handicrafts.

A dinner with traditional dishes of Tuvan cook, including meat and dairy products will be cooked specially for the guests.

★In the evening you have the opportunity to see a bewitching show: shamans’ kamlaniye*Kamlanie is a magical communication between shamans and spirits. During this ritual the shamans dance around fire, sing and beat a drum. Kamlanie will leave a long lasting impression, nobody remains indifferent after this ritual. There the shamans will tell you about their traditions, rituals and abilities. After that you will get an opportunity to ask them about your future, your health and experience the ritual of purification.

EXTRA CHARGE (OPTIONAL): shamans’ kamlaniye

Accommodation at the yurt camp Biy-Khem

(Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

A: Nowadays the tourists can follow exactly the same path that ancient nomads followed crossing Tuva from the east to the west and reach Khakassia. The route will go through the mountain pass. Here you can meet places which are considered to be energetically powerful. Before lunch there is a stop near a breathtaking mountain Khairykan – one of the most respected places in Tuva. In 1992 it was chosen by the 14th Dalai Lama to be an energetically powerful place. Once a year local shamans come here to get energy, strengthen and purify their spirits.

B: Picnic is organized right on the grass, next to a Buddha stela. And around the larches a lot of edelweiss’s are growing, which became a symbol of the mountains for many people.

C: On the way you will see the center of Buddhist culture, a ruined temple Ustuu-Khuree. The temple was the crowning of Buddhist construction in Tuva. And it was unique not only in Tuva, but also in the former Soviet Union. In 1930, after the adoption of a special resolution Ustuu-Khuree was closed, and in 1937 – destroyed. In 1999, the Russian government, recognizing the historic and architectural value of the unique temple Ustuu-Khuree, decided to restore it. In June 2012 the new temple was officially opened.

Khakassia begins after the Sayan pass, at a height of 2214 meters. The mountains here are covered with fabulous cedar taiga. We will spend the next two nights in a log cabin hotel in the taiga on the bank of the river Stoktysh.

Accommodation in the camp Snow Leopard

(Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

A: Free day in the Siberian Taiga. Hiking in the surroundings, accompanied by an instructor. You will be able to choose a route suitable for you:

  • Stoktyshkie mountain lakes (10 km one way)
  • Marankul lake (8 km one way)

In July and August you can gather gifts of the forest – berries and mushrooms which you don’t even need to look for – they are just under your feet. You will also have a chance to eat cedar nuts. A Siberian cedar is a unique tree. Those cedars which you will be surrounded by are the witnesses of several centuries, fed hundreds of generations who lived in taiga.

B: Taiga air makes you healthier, but the real cure for all illnesses is a Russian banya. A steaming Russian banya with brooms made of coniferous twigs, birch and oak twigs. Those who are courageous enough can jump into the cold river right after steaming. Time after the dinner is spent at the fireplace. Cedar taiga, fire, star-spangled sky and silence will make you forget about rush of the cities. All this will make you feel a part of wild nature.

Accommodation in the camp Snow Leopard

(Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

A: We head north in the direction of Abakan.
On the route we make a stop at a Khakasian village where there is a monument called Khurtuyakh Tas, a 5,000-year old stone sculpture in the middle of a burial mound. Local women leave offerings here in the hope that it will bring them children.

B: The ancient land of Khakassia takes the lead over Siberia and even Russia for the abundance of its archeological relics. Here right by the road you can see the rock paintings, every twenty meters – a burial mound or a stone figure, which is still serving as a cult place for the local people.

C: In the afternoon we arrive in the Kyug valley 137 km far from Abakan. Two great mountain chains meet here, and the valley is full of archaeological remains from various different cultures, including the Scythians. We have an excursion to the State museum reserve, and see petroglyphs that are 3-5 thousand years old, as well as burial mounds and archaeological excavations.

D: Dinner and overnight in a yurt camp. After dinner we will have a performance of a Khakassian national folklore group.

Accommodation at the yurt camp Kyug

(Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

A: After an early breakfast we depart from the yurt camp.

B: In a couple of hours drive trough Abakan and continue to the north, in the direction of Krasnoyarsk. Around 11 am we arrive at “The Valley of  Kings”, where there are about 30 burial mounds aged from the IV-III century B.C. The culmination of the trip will be the Great Salbyk Mound which was built on a noble family’s grave and excavated by archaeologists in 1954-56. It measures 0.5 km in perimeter and 11,5 m high. The total weight of vertical stones is approximately 60 Tons. Many think that this is a place where shamans enrich their power.

C: The group will have picnic in the open air.

D: In the afternoon we head on to Krasnoyarsk (a 5-6-hour drive from the Valley of the Kings).

The hottest month is July (average temperature is 20 °C). Sometimes there is “Indian summer” in the end of September.

Each season in Krasnoyarsk region has its advantages; therefore the choice depends only on what month seems to be the best in your opinion.

  • It’s very beautiful in May, as the greenery is still fresh, everything is in blossom, at the same time you can see snow high up in the mountains. It’s warm during the day, but rather cool in the evening.
  • In June everything is in blossom as well, and every week you can various colors of nature. Stable weather is characteristic of this period of time.
  • July is the hottest month, but sometimes there might rain for a week. The weather is stable and it’s warm in the day time and at night. At the end of the month the steppe starts getting dry.
  • The first half of August is warm, but later it starts getting colder. Nights get colder. At the end of the month there is a change of colors in nature surroundings: leaves get red and yellow. At this time of the year there is a great many of mushrooms and berries.
  • September is rich with a diversity of nature colors, red, yellow, and green colors prevail. Usually, the first half of the month is warm but nights are cold. During the second half of September it can be rainy, the temperature can drop to +5 °C.
  • In early October, it is already getting colder, the temperature can drop to 0 °C, sub-zero- temperatures at night, but winter is still far, there will be rather even no rains.
